Robert Presley “Press” Robbins

Robert contracted polio at a young age. His right leg did not grow to normal size, and his right foot was four sizes smaller than his left foot. But he overcame the illness to excel at baseball and tennis, and went on to leave a huge mark on youth sports in the Florence area. He played tennis at Florence Teachers College and baseball with a semi-pro team in Russellville.  He coached football and basketball at Fayette High School; football, basketball and baseball at Russellville; and basketball at Coffee, teaching there from 1947 until 1983.  He developed a Little League program at McFarland Park in 1953 and later developed the youth program at Wilson Dam. He ran the McFarland league until 1975. The city celebrated Coach Press Robbins Day on June 26, 1975. Ironically, he died on the same date in 2002.
