He began his swimming career at age 6 on the Florence Swim Team. He won more than 350 medals in age-group competition, while earning more than 35 high point trophies and setting 13 Southeastern age-group records. He won 10 Alabama High School Athletic Association trophies while at Coffee High School. He broke at least 15 state high school records. He was later awarded the first full scholarship for swimming at the University of Alabama. He received All-American honors in 1974. From 1974-1991. he coached the Tupelo Aquatic Club, Florence Swim Team, Decatur Swim Association and Sheffield Swim Team as well as Bradshaw, Coffee, Decatur, Austin, Sheffield and Muscle Shoals high schools. His team won more than 90 percent of its meets, along with nine Tennessee Valley Conference titles. Several of his players earned scholarships. He was a co-founder of the local Masters swim team in 1986. He coached and participated on the team and won numer­ous medals in national competitions. He participated in the Masters World Swimming Championships where he set a world record in the 50-meter freestyle event.
