John Smith, Jr. 

 

Played three sports at Coffee – football, wrestling and track. Was two-time All-State in football in 1972 and 1973, and named All-American in 1973. Finished third in the state in the heavyweight wrestling division and qualified for the state meet in shot and discuss throws. Named Tennessee Valley Conference MVP in football and selected to All-Time Coffee Team. Played in 1974 All-Star football game. Became three-year football letterman at Auburn, playing under Shug Jordan and Doug Barfield, starting in three Iron Bowls. Served as head football coach at Lee-Scott, East Lawrence and Mount Hope high schools. Led Lee-Scott to state championship. Was head girls basketball coach at Coffee and Mount Hope, and also served as head baseball, wrestling and softball coaches during 31-year coaching career. Coached in 25 playoff games.
