Johnston compiled a 298-104 record at Rogers High School from 1950 to the early 60's. His 74% winning percentage in basketball is impressive but his baseball record for 3 years was a phenomenal 63-6. His 1954 team went 21-1 losing only to Easley in the finals of the state. He was a pioneer in attending basketball camps and worked with John Wooden, a legend at UCLA, Bobby Knight of Indiana, Ray Meyer from Depaul, Dean Smith of North Carolina and Press & Pete Maravich of LSU. He is one of the few people to participate in the State Basketball Tournament as a player, coach, referee and school administrator. He umpired 18 years and also umpired the men's World Series Championship Game.
